Our Trail Rating

If you’re looking for one of the best sunrise hikes on Oʻahu, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike absolutely delivers.
Officially known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, this short but steep trail climbs above the beach town of Lanikai on the island’s windward (southeast) side. It’s famous for panoramic ocean views, colorful WWII-era bunkers, and front-row seats to the twin offshore islands locals call “the Mokes.”
And if you time it right in winter? You might even catch humpback whales breaching beyond the horizon!
Why Hike the Lanikai Pillboxes?

The goal was simple: we wanted to see the sunrise over the Mokes.
The “Mokes” are the twin islands of Nā Mokulua, which sit just offshore from Lanikai. From the ridge, they rise dramatically out of the Pacific, perfectly framed in brilliant morning light. It’s one of the most iconic views on Oʻahu.
We hadn’t seen the Mokes from this angle yet on our trip, so that sealed it. But what made it unforgettable was this:
We visited during winter — peak humpback whale season in Hawaiʻi. From the second pillbox, we watched multiple whales breaching just beyond the Mokes. Sunrise. Turquoise water. Whales flipping their tails out of the water. Spectacular!
Trail Overview: What to Expect
Trail Name: Kaiwa Ridge Trail (Lanikai Pillbox Hike)
Distance: ~1.6 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: ~600–650 feet
Difficulty: Moderate (short but steep and exposed)
Best Time: Sunrise (bring a headlamp if hiking pre-dawn)
This isn’t a long hike — but don’t let that fool you.
The Climb
The trail starts in a residential neighborhood above Lanikai Beach. There is no official parking lot at the trailhead. You’ll need to park legally in the neighborhood streets (respect signage), then walk about 4–5 blocks to the start.
The beginning section is the toughest part:
- Steep incline right out of the gate
- Muddy and slippery after rain
- Noticeable washouts from erosion
- Some scrambling over rocky outcrops and big tree roots
There’s even a rope along a fence line to help with traction in the steepest stretch. It’s not technical, but you do need decent balance and the ability to climb over roots and uneven rock.
If you struggle with steep terrain, this one might feel more intense than the mileage suggests.
The Pillboxes: WWII History with a Splash of Color

So what exactly is a “pillbox”?
They’re small World War II-era military bunkers, built as lookout posts to help defend Hawaiʻi during the war. The Lanikai hike features three of them along the ridge.
Today, they’re covered in ever-changing graffiti — everything from murals to giant painted chickens. It gives the hike a unique personality. You’re climbing history… with color.
Most hikers turn around at the second pillbox, which offers the most dramatic views.
The Views: Why This Hike Is So Popular
From the ridge, you get:
- Aerial views of Lanikai’s powder-white sand
- Turquoise water that looks almost unreal
- The twin Mokulua Islands rising offshore
- Kāneʻohe Bay stretching north
- Whale sightings in winter months
This is one of the most photographed vantage points on Oʻahu — and once you’re up there, you’ll understand why.
A Rare Surprise: The Starfish Flower

One of the most unexpected moments of the hike happened near the second pillbox.
We met a local who hikes the ridge multiple times a day. He pointed out a rare bloom tucked into the dry hillside brush — a starfish flower (Stapelia).
It looked like a five-pointed succulent star, thick and fleshy, with a big pink blossom.
Here’s the wild part:
- It only blooms for a few days
- Then it dies
- It smells like rotting meat
Yes — it’s nicknamed the “carrion flower” because the scent attracts pollinators. Not exactly fragrant… but incredibly unique. We happened to catch it during its short bloom window. Pure luck.
Parking & Safety Tips
This is important.
Because the trail begins in a residential neighborhood:
- Park legally and obey all posted signs
- Don’t block driveways
- Lock your vehicle
- Leave nothing visible inside your car
Cars have been broken into here. We were lucky — no issues — but don’t risk it.
Also:
- Wear shoes with good grip
- Avoid hiking immediately after heavy rain
- Bring water (there’s no shade on the ridge)
- Start early to avoid heat and crowds
Is the Lanikai Pillbox Hike Worth It?
Absolutely.
It’s short.
It’s steep.
It’s muddy at times.
And it’s one of the most rewarding sunrise hikes on Oʻahu.
Between the WWII pillboxes, the sweeping windward coastline, the Mokes glowing offshore, and whales breaching in the distance, this hike packs an incredible experience into under two miles.
If you’re staying anywhere on Oʻahu and want a hike that delivers big views without taking all day — put this one at the top of your list.
