Experience the Colorado River in all of its colorful majesty

Fascinating! That’s the word I’d use to describe my recent adventure kayaking to the stunning Emerald Cove on the Colorado River. This unique experience was unlike anything I’d done or seen before, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for an unforgettable side trip when visiting Las Vegas. After all, you can’t spend your entire time on the casino floor, can you?
Emerald Cove is a small, hidden gem tucked into the gray rock walls along the Colorado River, just a few miles south of Hoover Dam. While some might call it a “cave,” it’s more like a small, scenic inlet where only a handful of kayaks can fit at once. The cove gets its name from the vibrant green reflection that colors the water when the sun hits just right—a phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed! While this green hue is especially vivid within the cove, you’ll catch glimpses of it in other nearby sections of the river as well.
Enjoying the Journey to Emerald Cove
Getting to this stunning spot on the Colorado River is an adventure in itself. We started at Willow Beach Marina, about 20 miles southeast of Hoover Dam. The dam is located around 35 miles from Las Vegas, so some drive time is required, but the journey is well worth the effort.
The marina lies within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, with a $25 entrance fee for a day pass (or free access if you have a yearly America the Beautiful National Parks Pass). Fortunately, we had the latter, so getting in was a breeze!
Kayaking on the Colorado River
As we set off, the beauty of the river took center stage. Towering rock walls flanked both sides of the river, and the water was so clear we could see straight to the bottom in most places.
One thing became clear early on—Emerald Cove isn’t exactly a secret! Many other kayakers were already on the river when we arrived, including several guided tour groups. It was impressive to see the marina’s parking lot filled with vans and trailers dedicated to tours, underscoring just how popular this spot has become.
The closer we paddled to Emerald Cove, the more enchanting the scenery became. Tall cliffs cast long shadows over the water, enhancing the sense of mystery surrounding the cove. As we approached, we caught glimpses of the shimmering green waters contrasting beautifully with the bright blue sky.
Emerald Cove is a Popular Destination

We waited for about 30 minutes while two groups ahead of us took their turn entering the cove. Chatting with a friendly group from Ohio who were visiting Las Vegas, we shared recommendations, including the nearby Arizona Hot Spring.
When we finally backed into Emerald Cove, the moment felt surreal. The sunlight hit just right, casting an otherworldly, brilliant green reflection in the water. I’ve seen turquoise beaches in Mexico and dark alpine lakes, but this green glow was unmatched. You really have to experience it to believe it.
Considering a Trip to Emerald Cove?
For those thinking about kayaking to Emerald Cove, be prepared for a bit of a workout, especially when paddling upriver. But trust me, the effort is well worth it! Not only is the destination spectacular, but the journey itself is full of unique beauty and tranquility. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, and the downstream paddle back to Willow Beach was a relaxing end to the day.
We used a two-person inflatable kayak and two small sit-on-top kayaks, which worked well. Renting larger kayaks would make the trip even easier. We also saw others paddling on standup paddleboards, which looked like a fun alternative.
If you’re planning this trip, be aware of the rules around Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) stickers. Some watercraft require a sticker to certify they are free from invasive species like quagga mussels. Nevada’s website has more information on this program.
For an unforgettable kayaking experience near Las Vegas, Emerald Cove on the Colorado River is a must-see. The journey may be a bit challenging, but it’s an adventure you’ll remember forever. As I said at the start, Emerald Cove is truly fascinating!
