Ashlyne literally – and figuratively – learns the ropes at beautiful Cougar Cliffs. This popular spot north of Saint George, UT is a perfect place to develop your rock climbing and canyoneering skills.
When it comes to rock climbing and rappelling in Southern Utah, there is no better place than Cougar Cliffs. The area has features and routes for all types of climbers and adventure seekers – from the true beginner to the hardcore climber, and the the canyoneering addict.
First off, before you say anything about the picture above… we know you should always wear a helmet when dangling off a cliff. This particular trip was a spur-of-the-moment jaunt on a holiday, and we didn’t have a chance to gather the necessary gear. And besides, we kept it basic with a couple of novices, teaching them how to walk off an incline while attached to a rope. All went well, and no one was hurt.
With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s get into it.
Cougar Cliffs is a short six miles north of St. George on State Route 18. The views are spectacular all the way around. The red sandstone is brilliant, especially in the “golden hour” near sunset, as evidenced in the picture above. You’ll find challenges of varying degrees – from gentle slopes for the uninitiated to 150 feet of thrilling awesomeness. Climb up, or rappel down – it’s fun all the same.
After crossing through the entrance in the barbed wire off the highway near mile marker 6, you’ll find the first two mounds on the left at the bottom of the draw have some secure bolts at the top. The bolts are bare, so be sure to bring enough webbing and loops. The 40-foot cliff has bolts on the top for rappellers, as well as chains on the cliff face near the top for climbers. We’ve spent all of our time “training” at the first two options in this area, but there are several options to consider.
The Pros
Cougar Cliffs is by far the most popular rock climbing and rappelling option in the area around St. George. The location is close to the city, no matter where you are. The routes are numerous – both in terms of the number of options, as well as the variety of skill levels. The surroundings are beautiful – some of the best desert landscapes you’ll ever see. And best of all – it’s free! There aren’t any fees to park or use the trails.
The Cons
Because Cougar Cliffs is so popular, rarely will you ever have the place to yourself. I say this is a “con”; however, the place is big enough that you probably won’t feel uncomfortable sharing some of the scenery with your fellow climber. Parking is scarce, and getting to the shoulder can be kind of tricky when there’s a lot of traffic on the highway – especially if you are coming from St. George proper.
